Building an anti-erosion dry stonewall across a gully in the mountainous region of Limbà? The wall, one of several in this and other mountain gullies, will control water flows during torrential rains and reduce the run-off of valuable topsoil. - - Soil Conservation and Reforestation. Over-cultivation of marginal lands due to population pressure had led to extensive soil degradation. Once richly forested, now only 7% of Haiti's forestland is left. FAO, UNDP, Swiss and Swedish government agencies are collaborating with the Haitian Government on an anti-erosion/soil conservation project with the object of land reclamation, reforestation and environmental conservation. Farmers and foresters are being encouraged, through training, to apply techniques such as the control of mountain torrents with dry stone walls, the construction of agricultural terraces and communal reforestation on private property.
