Cauliflower is one of the experimental vegetable crops grown at the Cambà?à?e Horticultural Centre, 15 km from Dakar. - - Centre for the Development of Horticulture. Horticultural crops in Senegal have a high potential both for home consumption and for export. Such crops could contribute substantially to this country's economic development and nutritional improvement. The project consists of the establishment of a Centre dedicated to the experimentation and demonstration of horticultural crops and studies in the marketing of vegetables, with a view to introducing sound basic techniques which will enable growers to increase yields and diversify crops. The Horticultural Centre was established in 1971 at Cambà?à?e, situated 15 km from Dakar. Its infrastructure includes: offices, a laboratory, grading and parking bay, water reservoirs, roads, wells, wind-breaks and an irrigation network. More than five hectares are used for scientifically-valid trials and demonstrations. The Centre's activities are divided into four sections: experimentation, crop protection, extension and marketing. FAO experts are working with Senegalese counterparts, and training courses are given for technical instructors and some of the growers.
