DAHOMEY, May 1962 (Benin People's Republic from 1975-December).
Of some 120 thousand fishermen in Dahomey more than 100 thousand are lagoon fishermen. But as fish stocks are decreasing in the lagoon, the Government hope to move many of the fishermen to the coast so that they may fish at sea. This would also improve their health as they would have to leave the malaria-ridden villages built on poles along the lagoon.
Experts of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are working on this fisheries project.
The village market is held in dug-out canoes.
