ESTABLISHMENT OF SCHOOL CANTEENS, Ouagadougou, Upper Volta, 1970. More than 12,000 children attend primary schools in Ouagadougou, the capital of Upper Volta. Many are suffering from malnutrition which seriously hampers their educational progress. Through the establishment of school canteens, regular midday meals are being provided. An improved diet consisting of couscous ro rice eaten with vegetables, meat, fruit or yogurt is reducing the problem of malnutrition, and increasing school attendances and results. A central kitchen has been established in which all meals are cooked and then distributed to the various schools. The scheme is run by the National Ministry of Education with the help of a voluntary agency, the ?reres des Hommes", and the advice of an FAO/UNDP nutrition expert. The National Ministry of Education has asked the FAO/Freedom from Hunger Campaign for help in providing cooking equipment and two vans for the distribution of food. The total cost of this project is $11,785, which has been donated by Deutsche Welthungerhilfe. A three-handed problem is solved by this girl while eating her midday meal at a Ouagadougou primary school.
