Ethiopia, March 1953 - This photograph shows a laboratory in the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture: two veterinary assistants, in the foreground, are engaged in the preparation of anti-rinderpest vaccine from the spleen of goats infected with rinderpest. Another assistant in the background is taking ampoules of dried vaccine from a deep-freeze and packing them into a thermos flask. The anti-rinderpest vaccinators will then take the vaccine to the villages and start the vaccination of cattle. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has sent a mission to Ethiopia to help modernize the country's agriculture and forestry. Working there are experts in crop production, animal production, animal diseases' control, rural welfare, forest development and nutrition. This mission includes a team of FAO veterinarians.
