The objective of the Special Programme for Food Security in Uganda is to improve food security through demonstrating economically viable and sustainable technologies for increasing agricultural production hence productivity. This is to be achieved through water and irrigation development in combination with crop intensification and diversification.

Over 170 farm families have been given technology demonstrations on irrigation and water management coupled with appropriate crop husbandry. They have also been taught marketing skills and strategies for increased agricultural output. One of the target crops in Masaka was clonal coffee, an improved variety, which was irrigated using a motorized water pump. This system has helped to increase yields.
