Farmer using animal traction to plough while his young daughter leads the two oxen. - - Animal Traction Implements as Assistance to Rural Development. At the beginning of this joint FAO/Demark project, animal traction was applied to only 4% of the 500 000 existing farms and it became apparent that agricultural production could not be developed without it. The diversity of the implements used made extension work extremely difficult and repairs almost impossible. Therefore the project objectives include the organization of a programme of animal traction based upon standardization of equipment plus credit for farmers, and the improvement of cultural techniques and extension methods. The US Agency for International Development (USAID), has granted USD 400 000 so that farmers can obtain credit to purchase equipment and animals. Other donors are the Federal Republic of Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Great Britain and, of course, Denmark, representing a total of USD 6 million.
