Valparaiso, Chile, 1965. The United Nations Special Fund and the Food and Agriculture Organizati0n are suppctrting a Fisheries Development Institute, which is helping to provide the technical background for development of the country's fisheries. The Institute covers all aspects of the work in Chile (Northern Chile: anchoveta, Central Chile: demersal fish, and Southern Chile: shellfish. The technical school in Valparaiso is the only fisheries school in South America, and has become a training ground for fisheries officers all over the continent. There is a factory just below Valparaiso (the largest in South America), where fish meal is manufactured, and an average of 300, 000 kilos of fish fillets (from hake, or merluza) are processed per month, mostly for export.
