The Project, funded by the Belgian Government and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), was conceived to address natural resource management problems around the Tonle Sap Lake. The primary problem was degradation and loss of inundated forest habitat, which is essential to the maintenance of productive fisheries within the lake. The overall objective of the project was to promote participatory natural resource management with emphasis on an inundated forest ecosystem around Tonle Sap.
