Forestry worker uses an improved tool for stripping bark from a log. - - Multiple-Use Forestry and Agro-Forestry Development. Multiple-use forestry means the bringing together of watershed management, reforestation, industrial plantations, timber harvesting, wildlife management and the introduction of labour-intensive practices to create long-range agro-forestation development. Under the government project, field training and research centres have been established in national forests. Trainees and forest workers carry out species trials and the introduction of stabilization techniques in erosion gullies such as the planting of Leucaena, a fast growing legume tree now being cultivated in many tropical countries for both soil conservation and provision of animal fodder. UN/FAO experts provided through a UN Development Programme contribution of over USD 1.5 million have assisted the government project. Filipino counterparts carry on the work after the experts leave.
