Fuelwood from the Coatinga. - - Forestry Action Programme for Rio Grande do Norte State: UNDP/FAO/BRA/87/007. The annual demand for fuelwood and charcoal in Rio Grande do Norte State, designed for industrial and domestic consumption, is continually increasing. Institutions in agriculture and forestry are preparing a programme to ensure both the continued supply of forest energy products and the preservation of natural forest resources. A project financed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and executed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aims to increase fuelwood supply by planting a multiple-use variety of trees, reserve plantations for fuelwood, and improved forest management; a reduction in consumption by improved charcoal making techniques and more efficient brick-making kilns.
