The "Long March" Commune, covering an area of some 1,000 ha. outside Shanghai, was founded in 1958. It consists of 14 Production Brigades divided into 195 Production Teams devoted mainly to the cultivation of vegetables which are sold in Shanghai's markets. The Commune (with a total popu1ation of some 33,000) now produces between 200-300 tonnes of vegetables daily - enough to provide about 500,000 people of Shanghai with a variety of vegetables throughout the year. Other important Commune activities include pig raising (2,200 tonnes of pork meat were supplied to the Shanghai market in 1977), the production of organic and chemical fertilizer, the manufacture of agricultural too1s and machinery and the maintenance of water conservation.
