China, more than any other developing or developed country in the world, is producing an alternative energy for fuel called biogas. In one province alone (Sichuan) there are already 4 million biogas units working. The peasants are constructing their own home biogas units which will meet their daily household cooking and lighting needs. Communes are making large scale biogas units to provide fuel for electricity to run farm machinery and electric generators. Biogas is made from human and animal excreta and organic matter fermented in airtight "digesters", and methane gas is produced. As part of the UNDP/FAO regional project on organic recycling, Asian technicians have been sent to Sichuan province to be trained in biogas technology; the construction, operation and maintenance of small scale biogas units;and agricultural use of the biogas affluent.
