Indonesia, 1951 - Production of fish ponds has been carried out for many years in the Far East, and it is estimated that for a given area a well stocked fish pond can produce far more protein than any other type of livestock operation. In wet cultivation of rice, the flooded paddy fields can be stocked with fish to produce a useful fish crop in addition to the rice. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been helping in the distribution of Tilapia, a fish with special qualities for pond breeding.
