Java, 1951. A government project to irrigate 6,000 hectares by
building a 70 km canal, using local labour, primitive tools and almost
no machinery. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO) has sent many experts to the Far East to help Governments
to reclaim land by irrigation or drainage. Increased agricultural
production is the first step to healthier economy and subsequently
higher standards of living of the population, the ultimate goal of the
FAO.
