Kyrgyzstan, Jelal-Abad region. A FAO specialist is teaching the farmers new methods of agriculture. The tractor was donated to the local peasants. Using laser technology, the tractor is used to level the fields so that irrigation water does not collect in dips but is distributed evenly across the field. Farmers, government officials and water engineers have benefited from the FAO project Modernization of small-scale irrigated agriculture to enhance and diversify rural livelihoods. They received training in improved farming methods and especially how to manage irrigation water correctly. Crop productivity has increased thanks to the project, which was funded by Austria and the World Bank.
