Kyrgyzstan, Jelal-Abad region. Farmers gathered at the main irrigation channel where water is flowing to secondary irrigation channels which irrigate the fields. The peasants decide how to distrubute water between their fields. Farmers, government officials and water engineers have benefited from the FAO project Modernization of small-scale irrigated agriculture to enhance and diversify rural livelihoods. They received training in improved farming methods and especially how to manage irrigation water correctly. Crop productivity has increased thanks to the project, which was funded by Austria and the World Bank.
