The UN/FAO World Food Programme (WFP) has been assisting the government's rural development projects since 1975 with food aid to primary schools, rural youth clubs and health centres. Rural people throughout the country are also involved in food-for-work schemes such as community development (construction of public buildings, etc.), new water supplies, forestry and improved agriculture. Direct female participation in most of these activities is around 50%. WFP supplies include, over a six-year period, dry skim milk, wheat flour, vegetable oil, canned fish and meat at a total cost to the Programme (with additional cash contributions towards internal transport) of USD 12.5 million.
