Khao Khor is the scene of the longest battle ever fought in Thailand. From 1968 to 1982, the Thai army fought insurgents for the possession of this vital area of once heavily-forested highlands which is situated above the natural intersection of the main routes leading north, south, east and west. The fighting destroyed much of the watershed's original dense greenery and forest cover, vital to the rich farmlands of Phetchaboon and other central provinces below. Once the fighting ceased, illegal loggers, (semi-nomadic farmers) practicing slash-and-burn agriculture, and mismanagement by unscrupulous people helped destroy what little was left of the watershed's natural tree cover. Two years ago Khao Khor, once so thickly carpeted with green, was largely a bald and treeless zone. Today, thanks to a reforestation project funded by the United Nations Development Programme and administered by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Khao Khor is slowly recovering from its man-made wounds and is becoming a showcase for other Thai regions facing similar problems of deforestation and environmental devastation. 1992
