The Andean region consumes 3 million tonnes of wood per year, most of it indiscriminately cut by 5 million rural poor who need fuel wood and housing materials. This results in scarcity of wood, erosion and reduction of livestock and employment opportunities. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has initiated a pioneer reforestation programme to support National Forestry and Animal Life Institute (INFOR) efforts to motivate, capacitate and assist Andean communities in implementing forestry activities to promote their self-development. Project objectives are to satisfy domestic fuel wood demands, improve agriculture production and to augment rural forest industries. FAO activities include an improved woodstove programme, school forestry education programmes, community nurseries, charcoal and furniture-making industries and extension training and radio programmes.
