The aim of this TeleFood project was to relaunch the artisanal fisheries activities of three fishermen's groups at Lakes Nasho and Rwampanga in Kibungo Prefecture in the eastern part of Rwanda. Following the civil war in Rwanda the majority of the fishermen lost all their basic equipment. The Project provided fishing nets for the fishermen and also built an artisanal smoking oven and provided appropriate technical training. Each group also received wooden ice boxes to keep the fish fresh that was destined for markets in Kigali.
In 1997, FAO launched TeleFood, a campaign of concerts, sporting events and other activities to harness the power of media, celebrities and concerned citizens to help fight hunger. Money raised through TeleFood pays for small, sustainable projects that help small-scale farmers produce more food for their families and communities.
