Acute rural poverty is wide spread in the mountainous State of Oxaca in the south-centre of Mexico. The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of Mexico is helping 15,000 small and under-privileged farmers and fisherfolk through a Government Rural Development Project. The project aims to provide technical assistance and training; develop small-scale irrigation schemes; develop soil conservation, forestry, livestock, food-crop and fisheries activities ; and improve rural health through nutrition and better housing, and the construction of clinics and roads.
