World Food Programme is providing commodities worth more than $2 million to promote development in the rain-fed areas of Jordan which are at present underutilized. Labourers and local farmers are terracing the slopes and planting trees to control soil erosion conserve water. Wheat flour, pulses, cheese, canned fish, vegetable oil, tea, rice, sugar and dates are being distributed to workers and their dependents. The planting of dives, vines, and fruit trees mean a shift away from cereal production, so that greater advantage can be derived from the natural conditions of the chosen areas. The project began in June 1965 on 1,800 hectares of privately-owned land at Jarash, Madaba and in the Salt region. It was subsequently extended to an additional 3,600 hectares in these and other areas and is to run till September 1968. This project forms part of the Jordanian Government?s seven-year development programme which plans to increase by 30 percent the area planted with dive and fruit trees.
