RURAL YOUTH CLUBS, UDAIPUR UNIVERSITY, Rajasthan, India, 1973. Rural youth organizers from the Extension Department of Udaipur University are working enthusiastically in many villages throughout Rajasthan in north-west India---up to distances of 50-miles from Udaipur. They are bringing improved agricultural practices to the region, in which, until recently, the farmers were steeped in age-old traditions' - their crop yields were meagre, their livestock often in poor condition, with the result that they suffered great privation during the recurring droughts. It is to the youth of Rajasthan that the extension workers first address themselves. Advice and instruction is given to youth clubs and young farmers ' groups on how to organize new projects such as poultry keeping, kitchen gardening, the sinking of new wells and the construction of poultry housing. Members of tribal communities are generally reticent when confronted with new ideas and in most cases they refer to them disparagingly as being representative of 'city civilization'. It is therefore due to the patience and goodwill established by the University extension workers that improved and more productive agricultural practices are being undertaken. This Government project is being aided by 'the UN/FFHC/Action for Development with supplies of equipment and tools obtained through donations from Entraide et Fraternite, Belgium, in the sum of $59,100.
