SURVEY AND DEVELOPMENT OF PELAGIC FISH RESOURCES, Senegal, 1969.
The use of traditional fishing methods and gears in developing countries produces a limited yield from the sea's potential. Part of a United Nations Development Programme/FAO project to improve Senegal's fisheries includes the provision of a new fully-equipped exploratory fishing vessel, the ?aurent Amaro". FAO specialists assist in echo-sounding surveys and evaluation of coastal plagic fish, and the comparison of yields with different methods of fishing. Local counterpart staff and trainees receive on-the-spot advice and training aboard the fishing vessel. The sea surveys are supplemented by laboratory studies at the Fishery Division of the Ministry of Rural Economy in Dakar.
