Grenada, the most southerly of the Windward Islands, has long had to shoulder the growing expense of large food imports. In an effort to achieve, at least partially, some food self-sufficiency, the government has embarked, with FAO/UNDP help, on a programme of aiding the Republic's small farmers, who account for most of the local food production. Agricultural experiment stations, extension services, and advice on marketing, are some of the programme's major activities. Erosion control is also included as is assistance in bettering the quality of crops grown for export.
