Technicians checking soil at a rice experimentation plot. - - Yield Increase Through the Use of Fertilizers and their Inputs.: GCPE/NIC/015/NOR. This project of the Food and Agricu1ture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), funded by the Norwegian Government, is concerned with the judicious use of fertilizers and with so little preparation and management to improve crop yields. Research is done at national experimental stations and mainly with private farmers and agricultural cooperatives. The project carries out experimentation, instruction and demonstration on the optimum soil preparation and fertilizer use for any given crop. The objective is to increase crop yield and protect and revitalize the soil. Soil and crop management include correct ploughing depth, correct seeding and plant population, adequate fertilizer amounts and methods of application, crop rotation, organic and green manure, the use of inoculants for nitrogen fixation. All these conditions contribute to bringing in the highest yield for the soil in a given area. Field results are passed on to local farmers in field days organized by the project in order to demon-strate the best way to cultivate land and to improve fertilizer use.
