Thai farmer collecting maize with his ox-drawn cart. - - Forestry Rehabilitation and Diversification. Poverty and rapid deforestation characterize the northeastern region of Thailand. The government of Thailand, with the help of FAO/UNDP, is seeking solutions to these broad problems. More specifically, their joint project is trying to harmonize population resettlement with the rehabilitation, protection and management of selected forest areas. Agricultural diversification is promoted along with reforestation and environmental protection. Agro-forest villages are being established and determined efforts made to raise the standard of living of the local inhabitants, in which they themselves are urged to participate. Forestry staff is also being trained, an agricultural and forestry extension service set up, and pertinent data collected and analyzed. What results may be used as a model for similar projects in other parts of northeastern Thailand.
