The Philippines, 1960 - An Experimental Station set up in Guinobatan (Albay), serves as the principal centre for the anti-kadang campaign. An expert from FAO is cooperating in the campaign and in an extensive programme of research which it is hoped will help eliminate the disease. This photograph shows workers of the Franklin Baker Company of the Philippines sorting and cleaning coconut meat, one of the steps in the manufacture of coconut flakes (dessicated coconut) at the plant.
The Philippine coconut industry is one of the country's most important sources of income. With the assistance of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Government is fighting a vigorous battle against ?adang-kadang", a disease that has already killed some 10 million trees.
