Water buffalo farm in China. This is the only research institute in China for water buffalo. The institute is now independent but was once part of the Guanxi Animal Husbandry Institute. There are three breeds of water buffaloes at the institute: Pure Murrah, Pure Nili-Ravi (genetically selected for milk production and imported from India) and a cross-breed of Murrah, Mili-Ravi and local Chinese buffaloes, which are draught animals. Research into reproduction technology is carried out (in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer) and the Institute aims to introduce the Indian milking breeds within the local Chinese buffalo population in order to produce animals that have high milk yields and are capable of ploughing rice fields. Six hundred litres of buffalo milk is produced daily, which goes mainly into yogurt production at the milk processing plant at the buffalo farm.
