Workshop participants were shown how to harvest a forest uprooted by strong winds in the south of the Federal Republic of Germany. A tensioned steel wire is used to slide the logs to the roadside for collection and transportation to a timber yard. - - Forestry Training Germany, Austria, Switzerland. A forestry training workshop on the "Transfer of Basic Technology from the Economic Commission for Europe region to other Regions", was held in June 1986 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The workshop was organized by the Joint Committee on Forestry Training Matters which is composed of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the ECE, and the International Labour Organization (ILO). Demonstration of logging techniques formerly used in Europe, were illustrated for workshop participants by five developing countries. These techniques, which were highly successful in Europe before the introduction of high-tech machinery, are applicable to developing countries striving to increase their timber-harvesting output.
